| Historic restoration and adaptation of older buildings has long been a special interest of the firm. Our approach begins with a thorough understanding of the building and the community it serves. Our team has the needed expertise in architectural authenticity and technical construction that allows us to set realistic standards and maintain architectural integrity within realistic budgets. Producing clear precise construction documents encourages competitive bidding and reduces cost overruns. This gain can be exhibited over the years from the renovation of the Avon Theatre to the conversion of an existing bank into an upscale hotel called XIS all in downtown Stratford. Avon Theatre Renewal The renewal of the Avon Theatre encompassed several years of planning and construction around two theatre seasons. Work of the first phase was completed before the Stratford Festival's 2001 season. The second phase which saw the complete rebuilding of the front of house and renewal of the auditorium has just been completed ready for the 2002 season which marks the 50th season of the Stratford Festival . On May 29 the building was officially opened to rave reviews. Our firm's task to recreate a hall with modern amenities, with the flare of the building's original architecture and at the same time meeting the specific technical needs of the Festival staff has been successful. This was due in large part to the team of people working toward the renewal of the building. The Festival staff, the Joint Venture of Marklevitz, Architect and Davidson Langley Incorporated Architect, the consulting team and the construction management company of Vanbots all contributed to this success. The following is a quote from Richard Ouzounian printed in the Toronto Star, Thursday May 30, 2002 ".....The good news is that the renewal of the Avon Theatre is finally complete, and what a truly beautiful transformation it is. Without changing the basic structure of the building or altering its seating capacity, the Avon has been made a far more comfortable place for its patrons, blessed with spacious lobbies, ample legroom, improved sightlines and copious washrooms. And the former "black box" of its interior, which could loom so forbidding on occasion, has been replaced by warmly welcoming wood and a series of stylish architectural features that pay tribute to the past while evoking the present and greeting the future. All in all a superb job....."
